Law and Society welcomes Dr. Emily Lockhart

The Law and Society Program is excited to announce the appointment of Dr. Emily Lockhart as an Assistant Professor in the Law and Society Program.
Dr. Lockhart, who earned a PhD in Socio-Legal Studies from York University in 2024, is the first tenure-track appointment to Law and Society. Her teaching and research expertise are in feminist and critical legal studies, legal consciousness, sexual citizenship, and critical youth studies.
In addition to working on a book manuscript entitled “Tech-Facilitated Sexual Harm: Centering Youth Perspectives about Meaningful Justice”, Dr. Lockhart is collaborating with Allison Smith (Adjunct Professor in Law and Society and Acadia’s Director of Human Rights and Human Rights Education) and the Legal Information Society of Nova Scotia on a SSHRC-funded project to better understand how 2SLGBTQIA+ Nova Scotian teenagers employ justice responses following technology-facilitated sexualized violence.
For the 2025-26 academic year, Dr. Lockhart will be teaching LAWS 1003, LAWS 2003, LAWS 4003, and a special topics course, Justice in the Spotlight: Law, Society, and High-Profile Trials (LAWS 3013).
Dr. Lockhart begins her appointment on May 16. We are excited to welcome her to the Law and Society Program and look forward to her contributions to teaching, research, and community engagement.
